TruFlat Laser Wood - Wood for Laser Cutting & Engraving

Flat • CO² & Diode • Pre-Finished

About TruFlat, Engineered Wood for Laser Cutting

TruFlat is a double-sided engineered wood surface with 100% wood fiber core designed to stay flat for laser cutting and engraving projects. Featuring a smooth pre-finish on both sides, you can engrave and wipe on paint fills with easy cleanup. You don't even need masking as the paint wipes right off!

TruFlat® is a proprietary process of layering engineered faux wood faces onto both sides of a MDF core sheet. The designer faux wood faces are created through a 6 step painting process to simulate a real wood grain look. The core is made of a defect free standard MDF (medium-density fiberboard) which allows for easy cutting with a laser, CNC router or scroll saw. TruFlat is always sold double sided, so no worries on which side is front or back. TruFlat is not a veneer or laminate material.

Is TruFlat plywood?

No. TruFlat is a brand term used to describe TruFlat’s pre-finished and guaranteed flat wood engineered for laser cutting and engraving. The term “plywood” refers to TruFlat’s layered tech which attaches 2 pieces of pre-finished engineered wood to a 100% solid wood MDF fiber core. TruFlat guarantees their product as good both sides and always flat.

TruFlat Specifications

Each sheet of TruFlat® is constructed of 2 outer sides pressed onto a defect free MDF core for easy cutting. Thickness is approximately 3mm or 1 / 8 in. Sizes of sheets can vary +/- 1/4

How to Use

TruFlat should be handled the same as MDF, plywood, and acrylic normally would. When working with any of these materials, it’s important to operate in a well-ventilated space and utilize a dust collector and fume extraction system to ensure a safe working environment. MakerFlo provides laser settings by machine for cutting and engraving, see below. TruFlat items are non-stainable due to the sublimation coating.

TruFlat Paint does not have sublimation coated and is primed to be used for cutting and/or painting. All laser settings provided below for regular TruFlat also work for TruFlat Paint.

For laser engraving and cutting settings, please see our section below.

What is TruFlat made of?

  • 100% recycled/recovered wood fiber core
  • Engineered Tru-Color & Tru-Wood designer faces
  • Clear acrylic sublimation finish on both sides

TruFlat Plywood - Wood for Laser Cutting FAQ

What can you make with TruFlat Laser Wood?

TruFlat plywood is ideal for laser-cut and laser-engraved products such as:

  • Coasters
  • Earrings
  • Keychains
  • Ornaments
  • Name tags
  • Bag tags
  • Layered wall décor
  • Cake toppers
  • Promotional products
  • Door and window signs
  • Point of sale (table tents, business card holders)
  • Business cards
  • Craft fair and Etsy items

Because TruFlat is engineered for laser use, it cuts cleanly and engraves consistently, making it perfect for detailed designs and batch production.

Is TruFlat a profitable laser blank?

Yes. TruFlat is considered a high-margin laser blank because:

  • It cuts quickly with minimal waste
  • It engraves cleanly without heavy post-processing
  • It can be sold as finished goods at strong markups

Many makers use TruFlat to create lightweight, easy-to-ship products like earrings and ornaments — which helps reduce shipping costs while maintaining strong profit margins.

Profitability ultimately depends on your pricing strategy and product positioning, but TruFlat is designed to support efficient production and resale.

Why buy TruFlat from MakerFlo?

MakerFlo has been carrying TruFlat plywood since 2024 and was one of the early retailers helping introduce the brand to the laser community. During that time, we’ve worked closely with thousands of engraving businesses who rely on TruFlat for consistent results.

Because we specialize in premium laser blanks and engraving resources to help laser engraving businesses succeed, we don’t just sell TruFlat — we support it with:

  • Real-world laser settings
  • Reseller resources
  • Project inspiration
  • Customer support from experienced engraving professionals

While TruFlat is now available from multiple retailers, MakerFlo continues to be a trusted source for laser-ready materials and engraving guidance.

What are the most popular TruFlat colors?

While color trends vary seasonally, popular TruFlat finishes typically include:

  • Natural wood tones (Maple & Oak are most popular)
  • Black
  • White
  • Walnut-inspired finishes
  • Seasonal colors (TruFlat Paint is pre-primed so you can paint it any color for holiday or seasonal needs)

Many makers test 3–5 core colors first and expand based on customer demand.

Is TruFlat really plywood?

TruFlat is an engineered wood panel designed specifically for laser cutting and engraving and guaranteed flat, solving the warping problem of normal plywood.

While it is often referred to as “plywood” within the laser community, TruFlat uses an engineered core with a real wood veneer surface. This construction provides a smooth, consistent engraving surface and helps reduce internal voids that are common in some traditional plywood sheets.

Because it does not use stacked wood plies like Baltic birch, the edge appearance and internal composition may look different from traditional plywood.

TruFlat is designed to prioritize:

  • Flat, stable sheets
  • Consistent engraving results
  • Cleaner laser performance
  • Reduced internal inconsistencies

If you are specifically looking for multi-ply hardwood plywood with visible layers on the edge, TruFlat may look different than what you expect. If you’re unsure which material is right for your project, our team is happy to help guide you.

What other ways can TruFlat be customized?

Beyond laser cutting and engraving, TruFlat can be:

  • Scored and paint filled
  • Layered for dimensional projects
  • Combined with acrylic
  • Used with UV printing
  • Paired with vinyl
  • Sublimated (best with White, Linen, Maple & Oak)
  • Assembled into 3D designs

This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of product styles and branding needs.

Does TruFlat require sealing before engraving?

In most cases, sealing is not required before engraving. However, some makers prefer to:

  • Mask before cutting for extra clean edges
  • Apply a clear coat after engraving for durability
  • Lightly sand for certain finishes

Your finishing process may vary based on your machine and desired look.

Is TruFlat beginner-friendly?

Yes. TruFlat is designed to be laser-ready, which makes it suitable for:

  • New engraving businesses
  • Etsy sellers
  • Craft fair vendors
  • Established laser shops

Because it engraves and cuts consistently, it reduces trial-and-error compared to general craft plywood.

Can TruFlat be used for layered 3D designs?

Yes. TruFlat works well for multi-layer builds such as:

  • Shadow boxes
  • Layered signs
  • Custom wall art
  • Brand logos

Its flat profile helps layers stack cleanly and align properly.

TruFlat Troubleshooting Guide

General Pro Tip

Always test new settings on a small scrap piece before running a full sheet. Laser machines vary by wattage, tube condition, and calibration. Use published settings as a starting point only and fine-tune based on your specific machine.

Why is my TruFlat charring too much when cutting?

Excess charring is usually caused by:

  • Too much power
  • Too slow speed
  • Dirty lens or mirrors
  • No air assist
  • Incorrect focus height

Try this:

  • Make sure your machine is sitting on a level platform
  • Increase speed slightly before lowering power
  • Make sure air assist is on
  • Clean your lens and mirrors
  • Confirm proper focus
  • Mask the surface before cutting if needed

Small adjustments can dramatically reduce edge darkening.

Why isn’t TruFlat cutting all the way through?

If your material isn’t cutting cleanly:

  • Increase power slightly
  • Reduce speed slightly
  • Check focus
  • Confirm material thickness
  • Run a second pass instead of dramatically increasing power

If your board is slightly bowed, ensure it is fully flat on the honeycomb or bed.

Why does my engraving look too light?

Light engraving is typically caused by:

  • Speed too high
  • Power too low
  • DPI too low
  • Focus slightly off

Try increasing power 5–10% before adjusting speed.

Why does my engraving look too dark or burned?

Dark engraving usually means:

  • Power too high
  • Speed too slow
  • Too many passes

Lower power slightly or increase speed while maintaining clarity.

Why is my TruFlat warping after cutting?

Warping can happen due to:

  • Excess heat from slow cuts
  • Environmental humidity
  • Storing sheets vertically for long periods

Store TruFlat flat in a dry space and avoid excessive heat buildup during cutting.

Why are my edges rough?

Rough edges may be caused by:

  • Dull or misaligned optics
  • Improper focus
  • Insufficient air assist
  • Cutting too fast

Check alignment and focus first before adjusting power.

MakerFlo Pro Tip: Run a Test Grid to find your machine's best settings for Truflat. For cutting, make sure to cut small, .5in circles to find the best cutting settings
